DID YOU KNOW?

Summer greetings to PaPS members and soon to be members!

Let me introduce you to your current PaPS Assembly Representatives to Area 3 Council and the APA Assembly. Adam Tripp MD, Dhana Ramasamy MD, Hope Selarnick MD and Kavita Fischer MD. Area 3 Council’s Representative is Constance Dunlap MD (Washington Psychiatric Society) and I serve as the Deputy Representative (Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society). As a refresher, Area 3 consists of 5 District Branches of the APA: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC. Dr. Dunlap and I represent Area 3 on the AEC (Assembly Executive Council). Your Assembly Representatives want to hear your ideas, questions and concerns. They are your representative colleagues facilitating multi-directional communication between the Assembly/APA Leadership and you as members of the District Branch/Chapters AND you as members of the District Branch/Chapters and the Assembly/APA Leadership. This communication is vital and an area to be strengthened.

The APA is active with next steps for the 2030 Strategic Plan Initiative. Psychiatry.org – APA’s Vision, Mission, Guiding Principles and Goals (takes you to the Member hub; to see the exclusive Member portion, login). The Strategic Goals are focused on Medical Leadership, Member Success and Organizational Strength. I invite you to take a look and review the work so far with the Strategic Plan Initiative …follow the Strategic Plan progress with the Dashboard found at the APA website – Member hub for Psychiatry 2030 A Vision for Our Future…

In this Assembly update I am sharing connectivity to a wealth of information supporting your psychiatric clinical work, teaching/training efforts and your advocacy voice. What is this connection? The APA Website! https://www.psychiatry.org

The APA website is valuable connection for medical students, Residents, Fellows, Early Career, Mid-Career and Senior Psychiatrists…and your life-long learning. How often are you hearing or asking yourself “what is APA really doing?” The answer is PLENTY and it is vital to get the word out – communication, communication, communication. In July, Evan Eyler MD, past Speaker of the APA Assembly shared a post in APA Communities to Assembly Representatives with the goal to share with our District Branch membership. It highlights two specific areas for your review (and bookmark for regular access & review). The first is the Clinical Practice Guidelines Psychiatry.org – Clinical Practice Guidelines and the second is Resource Documents Psychiatry.org – Resource Documents. I think you know about and have used Clinical Practice Guidelines yet are you familiar with and utilize the Resource Documents? Resource Documents just out in 2026 include: Artificial Intelligence in Psychiatric Practice; Social Media Use in Youth; Introduction to Psychotherapy and Treatment Relationships from an Integrative Perspective (“curriculum for teaching early-stage psychiatry trainees essential elements and principles of psychotherapy for use across clinical care settings and patient interactions” – check out the article in the August 2026 edition of Psychiatric News); Psychiatrists in Supervisory Role; Person-Centered Language in Jails and Prisons. There are 109 Resource Documents! The most recent Clinical Practice Guidelines published in 2025 include: Prevention and Treatment of Delirium, 2nd edition; Treatment of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. Stay tuned as there is another Clinical Practice Guideline draft being readied for review/input this fall.

The APA website provides active and current APA Advocacy efforts and how you can help.  Psychiatry.org – Advocacy & APAPAC – sign up for the Congressional Advocacy Network, subscribe to the APA Advocacy Alerts and Updates and RESPOND when those Alerts are sent. The link is easy to help you connect the APA Advocacy message with your legislators. Contribute to the APAPAC and the PaPS PAC! Consider attending the APA Annual Advocacy Conference – this year is state focused and will be in Arlington, VA Sunday, November 15th and Monday November 16th. This is a wonderful way to learn about Advocacy. Registration information is found in this section of the website.

The APA is YOUR organization with the goal to help support your clinical care of patients and their families and to support you and colleagues in your life-long learning and advocacy work. Share ideas and concerns …ask questions with your PaPS Assembly Representatives and we will continue to strengthen communication with you!
