Aru Nittur is a fourth year medical student at Drexel University College of Medicine planning to pursue a residency in psychiatry. She is involved in community health across Philadelphia, serving as Outreach Director for the Philadelphia Human Rights Clinic and previously volunteering with Prevention Point.  Her interests center on low-barrier mental health access, harm reduction, and community-based care.

I am honored and excited to serve as the Guest Editor for the September edition of the PaPS newsletter. As a fourth-year medical student pursuing psychiatry, my involvement with the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society has been an invaluable part of my professional journey. It has given me the opportunity to work closely with leaders, connect with mentors, and grow as an aspiring clinician. Through PaPS, I am also looking forward to attending the Keystone Psychiatric Forum in a few weeks, and hope to see many of you there in person!

This month’s issue highlights both our specialty’s evolving future and its rich local roots. In his President’s Message, “Developing Minds in a Digital World”, Dr. Mark Matta reflects on the impact of emerging AI technologies on our youth and encourages us to remain thoughtful in the face of changing landscapes. Dr. Dhanalakshmi Ramasamy offers a look into our history as well. In her feature article “The Evolution of Psychiatric Care in the Lehigh Valley and the Legacy of the Lehigh Valley” she traces nearly seven decades of leadership, innovation, and advocacy. I hope you all find this month’s newsletter to be as thought-provoking and insightful as I have, and that it offers a meaningful perspective on both our field’s past, as well as its future.
