Volunteering Your Way

Volunteering Your Way: Bite-Sized, Time-Limited, and On Your Schedule

The backbone of organized medicine is its volunteers. You want to volunteer, but how can you when demands are high and time is short? You can’t, particularly in our current model where volunteering is built around what positions need to be filled and require commitment to a year’s worth of in-person meetings and conference calls.

We appreciate our full-time, long-term volunteers, but PaPS also encourages you to think outside of the box and create your own Society opportunity as a micro-volunteer. Contribute in ways that are meaningful to you in small bites, on your schedule!

Here are some ways you can help from home in 30 minutes or less:

  • Respond to Media Inquiries – PaPS frequently receives media calls on national and local issues. We are often in need of volunteers to do a 10-minute phone interview in specialty areas (child & adolescent issues, responding to a tragic event, addiction related issues, guns, violence, etc).
  • Welcome New Members – Help us to reach out to new PaPS members, welcome them with a phone call or email, invite them to the next local or state event, and get a sense from them of what the Society can do for them to help them better their practice. This task only takes a few minutes per person and could be accomplished in 30 minutes or less.
  • Review and Comment on Policy and Regulatory Actions – Help PaPS represent you by providing online feedback on important matters affecting your practice.
  • Contact a Local Product/Service Representative – Help our education chairs by emailing a local product/service representative with a cc to our staff encouraging them to participate as an exhibitor or sponsor at an upcoming local or statewide educational event. We will do the rest.
  • Are you attending a state or chapter activity and also have an interested in photography? We would love to have you photograph society events for publication in our newsletter and other communication messages.
  • Do you have an existing relationship with a local legislator? Help us educate them about upcoming bills impacting psychiatry by regularly calling them to offer assistance and resources.
  • Meet with your local legislator by attending a legislative fundraiser, say hello and offer the Society as a resource.
  • Mentor a Resident
  • Contribute to the PAC

Contact the PaPS administrators at papsych@papsych.org with your area(s) of interest, and we will help to identify opportunities for you so you can make an impact to drive the mission of PaPS.
